Ever seen kids bombing down dirt hills, launching off jumps, and getting rad on two wheels? That's BMX racing in a nutshell! Born in the sunny suburbs of Southern California back in the 1970s, BMX, or Bicycle Motocross, started with kids mimicking their motocross heroes on their bikes. It wasn't long before this high-energy sport made its way Down Under, and Victoria, in particular, played a crucial role in establishing BMX in Australia.

Way back in 1979, the very first Victorian BMX races were held at the Lalor Youth Cycle Centre in Epping, marking the beginning of a BMX legacy. Soon after, the action shifted to Sycamore Reserve in Mill Park, where a dedicated track was built, and the club we know today as Northern BMX Club began to take shape. Over the years, the club has evolved and grown, even changing names a few times – from Lalor BMX Club to Lalor Park BMX, then Northern Park BMX, and finally, Northern BMX Club. Through it all, the passion for BMX has remained strong.

In fact, when the original track at Sycamore Reserve needed some love, the Northern BMX Club crew teamed up with the Whittlesea City Council to give it a major revamp. This collaboration breathed new life into the track, making it even better for the next generation of BMX enthusiasts. Fast forward to today, and BMX is a global phenomenon with Olympic status and a whole lot of dedicated shredders. BMX racing is all about adrenaline-pumping action on a custom-built track packed with berms, jumps, and rhythm sections. It's a full-body workout that combines speed, skill, and serious fun. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, BMX offers a thrilling challenge and a fantastic way to get active and make new friends.

Bringing BMX Back to the North

Northern BMX Club (formerly Lalor/Northern Park BMX) was re-established in 2018 to bring grassroots BMX racing back to Melbourne’s Northern suburbs to promote and grow the sport of BMX.  With this goal in mind, the club campaigned and worked closely with Whittlesea City Council to redevelop the Sycamore Reserve BMX track, which was once home to Victoria’s first BMX club, Lalor Park BMX.  By March 2020 Northern BMX had grown a member base of more than 220 strong, becoming the largest BMX club in the state just six months after the official re-opening of the track.
